Last Night

Last night was great!

Yesterday, however, started out as a terrible day. I wasn't feeling well for some reason. Maybe I was undernurished or the wicked heat from the two previous days had had an effect on me--either way, in the morning I had written a short list of things that I needed to accomplish; I did none of them.

Today, on the other hand, was excellent. It's only two o'clock and I have already accomplished most of yesterday's neglected list. I feel great and am looking forward to completing more tasks before getting together with friends tonight.

"What caused this change in attitude?" you might ask.

My answer might be as follows:

Last night was thursday night. And anyone who knows me knows that thursday night is Caffe Lena night! Whoo-hoo! And what a night it was!

I think that last night's open mic was the best open mic I have attended--ever!! And that's saying a lot!

Firstly, the crowd was excellent; they were very attentive (once in a while you get unattentive people in the crowd who have conversations while you are playing--don't they realize you are pouring your heart out through song?) and appreciative of the performers, which was great. However, the performances--wow--were the best an open mic night has ever seen! Every person who took the stage sounded their best. I sounded, I believe, my best, as well.

Something else that made the night perfect was the flow from one performer to the next. What I mean is, professional musicians have set lists that they follow. They purposely put one specific song after another to keep the audience's attention and energy at certain levels to elicit certain responses. At open mic nights, each person gets two or three songs to play so there is no real set list or time available for the performer to work the audience in such a way; so, open mic nights typically have an odd flow to them. Last night, however, each performer seemed to work off of the pervious performer's performance, which made it feel like one big performance rather than a bunch of short ones.

In conclusion, last night was a most excellent night for me. It brought me up after a bad day and energized me for today.
